Finding Ways To Not Allow The Scale to Dictate Your Day

Finding Ways To Not Allow The Scale to Dictate Your Day

Let’s beat the battle of body image and feel beautiful!

How many of you have allowed the scale to dictate your day and how you feel about yourself? I ask you to be honest with your answer, as I will share mine with you. As an actress and life coach, you would think I have a handle on this, but body image and self-esteem are issues I struggle with and commit to working on every day! As a voluptuous woman, I have battled those “few extra pounds” and body image, since childhood. I have been scale obsessed, since high school and have made it my priority every morning (I mean, we have to weigh ourselves even before our coffee, because every ounce less counts, right?). It was not until I turned thirty that I got clear on how much I was allowing the scale to dictate my day and how “good” or “worthy” I felt about myself. It is amazing how my self-esteem rises and falls with a 3-5 pound weight gain or loss! My heart breaks when I think about the negative thoughts and words that have entered my mind about my body. Do the words “fat”, “flabby”, “ugly”, “disgusting” or “loser” resonate with any of you? Well, I am committed to ending this negativity! As a life coach to teen girls and women, I refuse to be a hypocrite with the work I practice! I want to share the positive and help you to find ways to not allow the scale to dictate your day!

Choose it

In my coaching, you will often hear me say, “Choose powerfully! There is a lot of power in our choices.” I feel strongly that we can choose our thoughts powerfully. You have a choice to stand on that scale and allow the weight and number to dictate how you feel that day or you can choose to say, “I will not allow the number on this scale to define who I am and what I deserve on this lovely day!” Choose to not give your power away to that scale, your weight or a number.

Compliment yourself on three of your best attributes

It has been scientifically proven that what we focus on persists! When we jump on that scale and are disappointed with the number, we tend to focus on the negative and put ourselves down. I want you to allow yourself to feel whatever it is you are feeling on that scale, but within one minute of stepping off and feeling the negative feelings, head to a mirror and compliment yourself on three of your best attributes! They can be physical or emotional. If you love your gorgeous eyes, focus on how gorgeous you feel they are! If you know you have a loving heart, focus on how loving your heart is toward others. I want you to focus on those three best attributes every time you feel negative body image throughout the day. And, you can change these attributes often, as we know you have many fabulous ones and deserve to acknowledge them!!!

Make a list of women you admire

I love this exercise and practice it often! Make a list of women whom you admire or aspire to be like. You can list celebrities, political figures, Mother Teresa or your Mom…it is your list! Next to the names, list all of the qualities you admire about them. You will be surprised by how different their body types will be. You will also be moved by their internal qualities and accomplishments! For as much emphasis as we put on the external and appearance, this exercise will show you what is truly important and impressive to others, including yourself! And, know that the incredible qualities you see in these women, are simply a mirror of you!
